Competition Rules
This competition is being run by Parliamentary Information Technology Committee (PITCOM) and administered by e-skills UK Sector Skills Council Limited (e-skills UK).
Duration
The closing date for this competition is 5pm on the 31st July 2008 and all entries must be received by e-skills UK at its address at 1 Castle Lane, London SW1E 6DR by this time. No entries received after this time will be counted. Be certain to follow the on-line instructions for submission which can be found on the Make IT Happen website at cc4g.net/makeithappen. e-skills UK shall not be responsible for any lost, late, misdirected or undeliverable mail/e-mail entries or correspondence.
Eligibility
This competition is only open to primary and junior schools based in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. All entries are subject to these terms and conditions together with any rules or other terms appearing in the competition pages of the Make IT Happen website.
To Enter
All entrants need to register their school by completing the on line registration form found on the Make IT Happen website cc4g.net/makeithappen. Each school registering must nominate a person who is to be the point of contact in relation to this competition and to whom all correspondence may be sent. Such person must provide an e-mail address for this purpose. The named contact must be duly authorised by the school to whom they are representing to make the entry in the competition, and shall be responsible for seeking all necessary consents both of the governors (where necessary), and the relevant parents or guardians of all the pupils who created the schools competition entry.
Entries
Details of the competition entry can be found on the Make IT Happen website. The minimum requirements for the entry are as follows:
- The entry should be the results of a group project.
- The project should be undertaken by a group of pupils from the entrant school.
- The pupils must be in the age group 9 to 11 years old.
- The nature and content of the project is open but it should show an innovative project that demonstrates the best use of the school’s Information and Communication Technology (ICT) resources to the benefit of the school, local community, in the UK or across the world.
- The project should be a pupil led ICT project.
- The entry may be presented in any format the School and pupils so wish provided such format enables the entry to be received by e-skills UK in a legible state.
The School’s entry should be sent to e-skills UK by e-mail using the proforma provided on the Make IT Happen site. Only one entry per School is permitted.
By making the entry the School hereby confirms that it has sought and has obtained the consent of the relevant pupil's parents or guardians that it may submit their work in the entry and that such work may be used by e-skills UK and PITCOM in accordance with these terms and that, if the entry should win, the pupils and the School can attend any events for the winners set out in these terms or on the Make IT Happen website.
Disqualification
Please ensure that the content of your entry does not contain rude or inappropriate material including swear words. Make sure that it does not show anyone in a bad light or that it does not tease anyone or contain inappropriate language. Please also ensure that the entry does not breach any other person’s intellectual property rights including copyright and trade marks nor does it contain confidential information or anyone’s trade secrets unless such person has consented to such use. e-skills UK reserves the right in its absolute discretion to disqualify any entry that is inappropriate.
Content of entries
By making the entry the school hereby confirms that the content is the sole work of the pupils and the School named on the entry form and that it does not contain any third-party material without appropriate recognition and permission. Where any photograph or video contains images of people other than the relevant pupils then the school confirms that it has obtained such persons permission (and that of his or her parents and guardian where such person is under the age of 16) to use the photograph and to allow e-skills UK to use the photograph as described in these terms.
Judging
All eligible entries received will be judged by a panel of judges to determine a winner. Judging will be based on IT skills, design and novelty of entry and which demonstrates a fit with the national curriculum and best use of the school’s ICT resources. The Judges decision on all matters relating to this competition is final and no correspondence or communication shall be entered into in relation to their decision.
Regional Competition and prizes
For the purpose of this competition entries from schools located in the following regions shall be judged against each other and the school in each region with the best entry shall receive a prize of £1,000. The regions are:
- Scotland
- Wales
- Northern Ireland
and the following regions in England
- East of England
- East Midlands
- London
- North East
- North West
- South East
- South West
- West Midlands
- Yorkshire and The Humber
Overall Prize
In addition to the regional prizes the best three entries from all the entries submitted (regardless of region) shall be entitled to the following prize:
- 1st place School - £4,500
- 2nd place School - £2,500
- 3rd place School - £1,500
For the avoidance of doubt the best three entries could all come from one region.
Judging and announcement
Judging will occur in September 2008 and the winning schools shall be informed that they have won by e-mail no later than 20th September 2008. The e-mail will be sent to the point of contact for the School and their e-mail address as appears on the registration form.
Acceptance of Prize
The winning School must reply accepting the prize within 2 (School) working days of notification. Failure to accept the prize within the time period shall be deemed the school’s waiver of the Prize and the promoter shall be entitled to choose an alternative winner who shall be notified and must accept the prize as indicated above (such notification may be after the 20th September). This process shall be repeated until winners have been allocated all the prizes.
- Any failure by the internet or other factors which prevent the School from accepting the prize within the time periods shall not be taken into account.
- Sending an acceptance email (of the prize) shall be deemed acceptance by School and of these terms and conditions and rules.
- The name of the School will be posted on the Make IT Happen website following the School’s acceptance. The School and pupils hereby agree that the Promoter may post the School’s name on its website and may supply the names, as prize winners, to any one who requests a copy in accordance with clause 3 below.
Prize Giving Ceremony
Each winning school shall be invited to attend a prize giving ceremony at the Houses of Parliament to be held in October 2008, the exact date will be notified to the winners. The invitation will be limited to:
- up to a maximum of 6 pupils who created the winning entry and a maximum of two teachers from the winning School;
- the attendance at the Houses of Parliament together with light refreshment at the ceremony.
The School must confirm with e-skills UK the details (including names) of all persons attending the prize giving ceremony within 7 days of receipt of the invitation. If any such person is disabled or has specific needs then full details should be provided to e-skills UK well in advance of the prize event. The school must seek and obtain the consent of the pupil’s parent or guardian to allow that pupil to attend the prize ceremony.
All persons attending the prize event:
- must comply in all respects with the Houses of Parliament security and site rules and any instructions given by authorised personnel;
- shall be fully responsible for the arrangement and cost of all and any transportation to and from the Houses of Parliament and any accommodation and sustenance.
e-skills UK right to use the entry
Submission of an entry grants PITCOM and e-skills UK and its agents the right to publish, use, adapt, edit and/or modify such entry in any way, in any and all media, without limitation, and without consideration or compensation to the entrant, whether or not such submission is selected as a winning entry. Submission of any entry further constitutes the entrant’s consent and licence to PITCOM and e-skills UK over any and all rights, title Intellectual Property rights and interest in the entry, including, without limitation, all patent rights, copyrights and any other intellectual property and the entrant hereby agrees to waive all moral rights he or she may have to enable PITCOM and e-skills UK to publish, modify or otherwise make use as it see fit of the content of such entry. e-skills UK is under no obligation to return any entries to the entrants.
NOTES
- No purchase is necessary to enter the Make IT Happen competition.
- The Prize award ceremony description is illustrative and not definitive. e-skills UK or PITCOM reserves the right to vary, postpone or cancel the ceremony at any time due to unforeseen events or as may be instructed by the parliamentary authorities. The invitation to attend the Prize giving ceremony is personal to the invitees and it may not be transferred or invitees may not be substituted without the express prior written permission of e-skills UK.
- A list of the names of winning Schools will be posted on the Make IT Happen website alternatively you can request a list by sending a stamped self-addressed envelope marked with the competition name to e-skills UK at 1 Castle Lane, London SW1E 6DR with your request which must be received by e-skills UK by the end of November 2008.
- e-skills UK reserves the right to waive any rule in favour of an entrant without waiving that rule for any other entrant if in the promoters opinion it is fair and reasonable to do so and such waiver does not unreasonably discriminate against any other entrant.
- The rules and all instructions and guidelines published on the CC4G website and on any advertising or promotional materials relating to the Competition form part of the rules of the Competition but, in the event of a conflict of interpretation, these rules shall prevail.
- As well as details of names the school (having obtained the Pupil’s parents or guardian’s consent) hereby agrees that e-skills UK or PITCOM may also publicise statements made by or attributed to winners relating to the Competition and the likeness of any finalist or winner, unless otherwise requested.
- To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law (but not otherwise), e skills UK and its agents assume no responsibility and are not liable for any representation, warranty or guarantee in respect of any prize (other than those warranties implied by statute and which cannot be excluded) or for the failure, loss, late receipt or interception of or damage to any notification sent by or to e skills UK or any other communication.
- e-skills UK may terminate or suspend the Competition at any time due to supervening circumstances beyond its control.
- These Rules are subject to interpretation under English law and to the jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.
